Here’s what you should know about the difference between blood and urine pregnancy tests and how to move forward with clarity.

Urine Pregnancy Tests

Urine tests are the most common type of pregnancy test and are available both over the counter and in medical settings. These tests detect the presence of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), a hormone your body produces after a fertilized egg implants in the uterus.

When taken after a missed period and used according to the instructions, urine pregnancy tests are generally very accurate. However, testing too early or drinking a lot of fluids beforehand can dilute the hormone levels in your urine, sometimes leading to a false-negative result.

Blood Pregnancy Tests

Blood tests also measure hCG levels, but they’re administered in a doctor’s office or medical lab. Because they can detect smaller amounts of hCG, blood tests can identify pregnancy earlier than urine tests.

They may also be used to monitor hCG levels over time, check for potential complications, or assist with fertility treatments.

For most women, a urine pregnancy test is sufficient to confirm pregnancy, but medical-grade testing can offer additional reassurance and accuracy.

What Happens After a Positive Test?

If your test result is positive, the next important step is an ultrasound. An ultrasound confirms the pregnancy’s location (to rule out an ectopic pregnancy), estimates how far along you are, and provides essential information for your next steps.
