If you’ve had an abortion and are still feeling pregnant, you may be wondering whether what you’re experiencing is normal. Maybe you’re still nauseated, your breasts are still tender, or you’re more tired than usual. These symptoms can be confusing, especially if you expected them to disappear right away.

Every woman’s experience is different. While pregnancy symptoms often begin to fade after an abortion, they don’t always stop immediately. Understanding what may happen afterward can help you know what to expect and when it may be time to seek medical attention.

If you’d like someone to talk to about your experience or your next steps, Caring For Women offers free peer counseling in a private, supportive setting.

Pregnancy Symptoms May Not End Right Away

Many pregnancy symptoms are related to pregnancy hormones, including hCG, which gradually decreases after an abortion rather than disappearing overnight.

As a result, symptoms such as nausea, breast tenderness, fatigue, or food aversions may continue for several days or even a few weeks before improving. The duration varies from woman to woman.

If your symptoms gradually lessen, that may be part of your body’s adjustment.

When Symptoms Don’t Improve

If pregnancy symptoms continue without getting better, become more intense, or are accompanied by heavy bleeding, severe pain, fever, or other concerning symptoms, contact a healthcare provider promptly.

In some situations, ongoing pregnancy symptoms may indicate that additional medical evaluation is needed. Rather than guessing or assuming, it’s always best to discuss persistent symptoms with a qualified healthcare provider.

Emotional Recovery Can Take Time Too

Physical symptoms are only one part of recovery.

Some women feel relief after an abortion. Others experience sadness, grief, anger, regret, or a mixture of emotions that change over time. There isn’t one “right” emotional response, and your feelings may not look like someone else’s.

Giving yourself permission to acknowledge those emotions can be an important part of healing.

You Don’t Have to Process It Alone

Whether your abortion was recent or happened years ago, you may still have questions about what you’re experiencing.

At Caring For Women, we offer free peer counseling where you can talk through your experience in a caring, confidential environment. If you’re looking for continued support after an abortion, we also offer confidential after-abortion support in individual or group settings, depending on what feels most comfortable for you.

If you have questions about a current pregnancy, we also provide free pregnancy tests and can offer referrals for an ultrasound when appropriate.
